When is the perfect time to buy?

Adjusting clocks at the Science Museum in London Time waits for no man: Paying close attention to the timing of your purchases could save you a lot of money It used to be, as the saying goes, that timing was more an art than a science. But a raft of new companies using big data analytics aims to change this by telling you the best point in time to buy everything from a sofa to a plane ticket.

Nathan Sharp wanted to buy a pair of skis, but it was September and he knew the skis might end up gathering dust and taking up space in his closet until the ski season started in December.

So should he buy now, or wait and risk that the price would rise?

It's a problem that faces many consumers, and it was one that Mr Sharp discovered had no easy solution.

So he and co-founders Greg Kimball and Abe Kurjal built one.

Nifti, which was launched this month, aims to track the prices of consumer goods like clothing and home goods, alerting users who install the bookmark on their browser when the price of the item they're coveting drops below a certain price.

Nifti screengrab Nifti's founders want to expose the "secret life of prices"
But more than alerting users to price falls, it aims to gather pricing data over time to better understand price fluctuations.

Nifti wants to expose "the secret life of prices," says Mr Sharp.

"As e-commerce platforms have become more sophisticated, and merchants are more experimental with their pricing tactics, prices are changing more than you would expect."

Now is the time
Online shopping and more flexible and dynamic pricing have changed the calculations for consumers.

When is the perfect time to buy?

"Maybe two years ago it wouldn't have been as big of a problem. But now - Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy - they're some of the retailers changing prices the most. Intra-day it will change several times on the most popular items," says Shauna Casey, vice-president of research and marketing at Decide.com.

Like Nifti, it focuses on helping consumers to better time purchases on more than three million items using 100 different factors.

"The new question has gone from, 'What should I buy?' to 'When should I buy it?".

Airline ticket prices are one of the most perfect examples of chaos theory in the world”

End Quote Stefan Weitz Microsoft senior director of search It's only going to get more complicated, as more purchasing takes place on the web. Online commerce is expected to top $1.2 trillion in 2014, according to research firm eMarketer.

The good news is this explosion in online retail and dynamic pricing have correlated with a rise of more and better data.

This in turn has made it possible for new technologies to employ mechanical learning techniques to pinpoint the perfect time to purchase.

"The machine learning technologies we use have been around a long time," says Giorgos Zacharia, Kayak.com's chief scientist, who helped build the travel website's fare price predictor, which looks at airline and hotel prices.

"The ability to get access to the data quickly is what has made the difference."

Up in the air
Airline ticket prices were one of the first arenas that data scientists targeted with these improved technologies, partly because of the easy availability of pricing data.

"Airline ticket prices are one of the most perfect examples of chaos theory in the world," says Stefan Weitz, Microsoft's senior director of search.

"Some small variable somewhere has kicked off a chain of events that's kicked off price variation or price variability."

Using variables such as historical data, capacity, and what's happening in different areas, Bing Travel - formerly known as Farecast.com, which was acquired by Microsoft in 2008 - claims to tell you with 86% accuracy whether you should buy a plane ticket now or wait, because the price will drop in the near future.

When it gets a prediction wrong, crucially, it aims to show users why the wrong prediction was made - displaying colourful pricing graphs and data points - to maintain trust.

User feedback can be plugged into the algorithm to improve future performance.

When timing isn't everything
Beyond the limitations of the algorithms powering price predictions, the reality is that there are certain areas where knowing when to buy is of little use.

Take concert tickets.

SeatGeek aggregates and tracks prices of tickets to events like baseball games and concerts.

When it was launched, it aimed to be the Farecast of event tickets.

Electric Daisy Carnival owl and crowd Price-wise, it's always best to buy concert tickets at the last minute
However, "the data would indicate that the best time was always to wait a little bit longer because due to the perishability of tickets, the ticket has a finite expiration date," says Will Flaherty, SeatGeek's director of communications.

"What you tend to see is the very best deals in the marketplace are going to show up at the last minute" - which isn't helpful for anyone who wants to make plans more than an hour in advance of the event start time.

Now, the company calculates what it calls a deal score - a rating on a scale from one to 100 which tells users if tickets are being underpriced or overpriced for an event.

Canadians tend to shop in the evening after they're done with work… Australians tend to shop on their lunch hour, and Russians tend to shop all day long”

End Quote Michael DeSimone CEO, Borderfree Know your enemy Timing isn't just important for consumers, obviously, but for retailers as well.

Big retailers like Amazon and Walmart are constantly monitoring consumer buying habits and competitor pricing, trying to maximise profits throughout the day.

Already, one company - Borderfree, which aims to help retailers expand their online shopping portals globally - provides shopping data to help online retailers better target the timing of their online sales.

"We've looked at the times of day that people shop," says Borderfree boss Michael DeSimone.

"Canadians tend to shop in the evening after they're done with work… Australians tend to shop on their lunch hour, and Russians tend to shop all day long."

It almost goes without saying that technologies that aim to help shoppers find the lowest price aren't exactly in their best interest.

This is why, at least for some companies looking to help consumers time purchases, the cliché "know your enemy" isn't too far off.

"We've built the same technology" as e-retailers like Amazon," says Decide.com's Shauna Casey.

"If they would change the way that they're pricing products, then we can determine those patterns and then predict that as well."

Just, as they say, in the nick of time.

Review: Nudge and tweak fate to pull off the perfect dinner in Save the Date

Save the Date Attempt to take a friend out for the perfect dinner in Save the Date. The unexpected and unusual crop up in every play-through.

Let's go grab some burgers. Or maybe Thai food sounds good? If everything else is closed I'm sure we can go for some tacos. It's just important that we get some dinner and have a really good time—and you can certainly try in Save the Date.
Choose between burgers, tacos and Thai food. Burgers felt like a safe bet.
What starts as a silly dating simulator—the kind where you play as a school kid trying to score a date with the hottie in homeroom through different dialogue trees—quickly turns into a surprising, absurd, deep-thinking experience that I guarantee you weren't expecting.

The premise seems simple enough: Take your friend Felicia on a dinner date and have a good time. At first, the corny dialogue will make your head will hurt from eye-rolling. The deliberate corniness grows more comical after playing through a few times, and it actually drives home the point of the game. And the deeper you get into the game, the deeper the dialogue gets.
Expect to see this screen a lot. Seriously.
As you get more involved in the story, the dialogue evolves, too: It gains substance and real meaning. You ponder Felicia's words and wait for the next tidbit of information she has to share. It feels like your responses really will make an impact. The key is to just get through that first play-through.

Save the Date isn't a one-trick pony. There are multiple outcomes that vary greatly. Taking someone out for a simple dinner becomes a laborious task of quick thinking and making logical decisions. Fate also plays a starring role. I won't say too much more on the subject, because it would venture far into spoiler territory.

Your first game will be quick, most likely under three minutes. However, it'll leave you playing for hours as you restart again and again. As early as your second play-through you'll begin to notice subtle changes that morph the game in different directions, and it quickly becomes obvious that each play-through is not an isolated occurrence.

If you made a decision that ended the game prematurely, it will make a nice cameo with a new option that uses this knowledge to your advantage. Are you psychic? Some sort of meta user? Or maybe you're just thinking clearly this time.

Don't be afraid to poke around. The best strategy is to get your nose in Felicia's business, her personal life, and her history. On the next play-through you can use this to your advantage to both surprise her and change the game to go on just a little longer each time. Even the game files have some fun Easter Eggs, such as one that lets you hack the game by changing one value. If you know where to look, you'll find some pretty simple hacking instructions.
Skip the parts you've played through a million times by quicksaving right before making a decision.
Save the Date is free, bite-sized, packed with content, and manages to surprise you time and time again. It could have been a lame, run-of-the-mill dating sim but instead experiments with multiple story lines, combining the past and present, and blurs the lines between playing a character and being the character. If you're looking for a good laugh with some interesting surprises, Save the Date is worth the time it takes to install and play through a couple of times. Just don't be surprised if you find yourself still playing in a few hours.

Archbishop Prays For 'Peaceful, Perfect End' For Nelson Mandela

A well wisher walks in front of a wall covered with messages to the ailing former South African president Nelson Mandela in Pretoria on Wednesday.
A well wisher walks in front of a wall covered with messages to the ailing former South African president Nelson Mandela in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Nelson Mandela remains in a South African hospital in critical condition, today.

South African Archbishop Thabo Makgoba visited the hospital to pray with his family on Tuesday. On his Facebook page, Makgoba posted the prayer he said for the 94-year-old anti-apartheid legend and former president. He wrote:

"May your arms of love, stretched wide on the cross for us, now enfold Madiba, and Graça, with compassion, comfort and the conviction that you will never forsake them but that you will grant Madiba eternal healing and relief from pain and suffering.

"And may your blessing rest upon Madiba now and always. Grant him, we pray, a quiet night and a peaceful, perfect, end."

One news channel reports that outside the hospital, the messages left for Mandela have shifted from hopeful to full of resignation.

Reports:

"'You are and will always be a true legend and grandfather to us all,' reads one note tied around the neck of a little white bear. Another, placed with a bunch of proteas, the country's national flower, says 'Tata Mandela you have touched our lives and blessed us in more ways than one. We love you.'

"Many of the messages appear to be written by children, in colored glue and pen, including one which features the hand prints of children still far too young to understand the indelible mark the former president has left on their country.

"The touching and very personal tributes started appearing on the wall on June 8, the day Mandela was admitted to hospital for a recurring lung infection. However, what was hoped to be a short stint has stretched into its 19th day, the longest period of hospitalization ever for a man known not for his physical strength but personal fortitude."
