O2 set for August 4G launch

Mobile operator O2 today confirmed its 4G network was set to go live on 29 August.

London, Leeds and Bradford will be the first locations to get the faster mobile speeds on launch day, but the company promised to hook up 10 more cities to the network by the end of 2013 – Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Liverpool, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Sheffield, Manchester and Edinburgh.

O2 claimed the first phase would see up to five million people able to access 4G, while the continued roll-out plan will see an extra two million get the capability each month. Its overall goal is to provide 98% of the population with 2G, 3G and 4G coverage – an obligation it inherited from the spectrum auction earlier this year, with an imposed deadline of 2017.

“The full potential of 4G is as yet unexplored, but what we can be sure of is that it will allow for a whole new world of opportunity that people are now ready for,” said Ronan Dunne, CEO of Telefónica UK – O2’s parent company.

“Over half of our customers say they use more data than two years ago and even more use Wi-Fi wherever they go, to always stay connected. Given this trend, there is no doubt that 4G will transform our lives, be it as consumers, in business or through public sector services.”

Tariffs are set to start at £26 per month, although further details of O2 plans have yet to be revealed. The operator did promise there would be specific business tariffs for tablets and mobile broadband from launch though, along with mobile Wi-Fi in the coming weeks.

With this launch, O2 becomes the second operator to offer 4G in the UK following EE’s launch in 2012.

Steven Hartley, telco strategy analyst at Ovum, welcomed the extra competition coming to the market but warned EE did have a distinct advantage still.

“In spite of the impending competition, it should be stressed that EE has a considerable LTE coverage (and therefore addressable market) lead and a particularly strong spectrum position relative to O2,” he said.

“This is readily apparent in the fact that O2’s launch includes only three cities from the outset.”

But Hartley still believed O2 would win over customers with its reputation.

“O2 has proven adept in the past at attracting customers in the fiercely competitive UK market,” he said. “Although details of O2’s LTE plans are lacking in today’s announcement, we like O2’s ‘30 day Happiness Guarantee’, in which dissatisfied customers can switch to a 3G plan if LTE fails to meet their needs.

“Getting LTE in the hands of users so that they can experience the benefits of the technology has been one of the key challenges for operators around the world and this approach allows hesitant customers to take the plunge.”

O2’s announcement comes the day after Ofcom confirmed all the spectrum auctioned off for 4G services had been cleared by Arqiva and Digital UK, so was now ready for its new purpose.

Samsung posts record profit, but mobile slips despite Galaxy S4 launch

Samsung Electronics said sales and profits soared in the second quarter from a year ago, but increasing competition in smartphones hurt performance in its core mobile division.

The company said it booked a net profit of 7.77 trillion won (US$6.89 billion) during the April-June period, up 50 percent from a year earlier. Sales were up 21 percent to 57.5 trillion won.

The strong showings were marked by strong quarterly gains in every division except its core mobile business. Samsung launched its flagship Galaxy S4 in April with a massive global marketing campaign, after introducing it at an event in New York City's Radio City Music Hall. The company said increased marketing costs and competition hurt its profitability during the period, pulling operating profit down 3 percent even as its sales increased.

Executives hinted in an earnings conference call that new high-end phones are on the way, noting that the product cycle of smartphones is now about a year and its component business expected a boost from new advanced handsets in the second half of the year. Jeeho Baek, an executive in Samsung's semiconductor business, said he expected more demand due to the company's "planned launch of a flagship smartphone model."

The company said that the recent explosive growth of smartphones is due to cool off in the near future.

"Although we expect the smartphone market to sustain growth in the third quarter, it is possible the pace of growth may slow down slightly," said Hyunjoon Kim, an executive in Samsung's mobile division.

Samsung is a dominant manufacturer of display panels, NAND flash memory and other components, but the vast majority of its sales and profit now comes from its mobile division. The company said the Galaxy S4 sold more than 10 million units less than a month after launch, but has been quiet about the phone's performance since. In some markets, such as Japan, the phone has been sharply outsold by rivals.

Samsung's earnings reported Friday were in line with the forecast it made earlier this month. Investors have been disappointed with the company despite the strong showing, and the company's shares are down nearly 15 percent over the last two months. A survey of analysts by Bloomberg taken before the earnings report predicted second-quarter net profit to be about 6 percent higher than reported.

Earlier this week, main rival Apple said profits were down 22 percent during the quarter, but analysts expected the decline as the company did not have a major product launch during the period. Apple CEO Tim Cook said new products will be released later this year.

The company said it booked strong sales in its chip business, and expects demand for DRAMs used in graphics to spike over the second half of the year due to demand from new gaming consoles. Both Microsoft and Sony are gearing up to release new game versions of their consoles.

Kickstarter to Launch in Canada This Summer

KARLOVY VARY -- Crowdfunding platform Kickstarter is to expand into Canada later this summer, according to an announcement on its Twitter account.

The crowdfunding platform for new businesses is so far inviting Canadians to submit their e-mail and project category to receive a signal when the site arrives north of the border.

Canadian filmmakers have looked to the crowdfunding service with relish since Kickstarter helped raise financing for a Veronica Mars movie and Zach Braff's Kickstarter campaign for Wish I Was Here closed with nearly $3.1 million in donations.

The move north by Kickstarter follows rival Indiegogo, which has Canada as its second-largest market, last week expanding its payment options for local content creators.

Kickstarter launched in the U.K. a year ago.

Oracle 12c database coming 'within two weeks,' middleware launch on deck

Oracle’s long-awaited 12c database has apparently received a firm launch date, with a company executive stating that it will be released “within the next two weeks.”

In addition, Oracle plans to release an update to its Fusion Middleware stack during its first fiscal quarter, said Thomas Kurian, executive vice president of product development. Kurian spoke on Tuesday during the company’s fiscal 2014 partner kickoff event, which was webcast.

Given that Oracle’s first quarter began June 1, that would place the Fusion Middleware launch between now and the end of August.

Kurian’s statements come after a period of confusion over when 12c would finally reach market. Word leaked early this year that beta testing had been completed and a release was imminent, but ultimately one never occurred.

Database 12c, wherein the “c” stands for cloud, incorporates a feature Oracle is calling “pluggable databases.” This will allow a single Oracle database instance to hold many other databases, allowing for more efficient use of system resources and easier management.

Oracle is also calling pluggable databases a superior way to achieve multitenancy for cloud applications. SaaS (software as a service) vendors have typically used application-level multitenancy, in which multiple customers share a single application instance with their data kept separate. Pushing multitenancy to the database layer provides better security and other benefits, according to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison.

Pluggable databases, despite being what one Oracle executive has called a “fundamental” architectural change for database technology, will be sold as a separate option, and not received as part of customers’ regular annual maintenance fees.

Still, Oracle is betting big on 12c not only with respect to end-user companies embracing the technology, but fellow software vendors as well.

On Monday, Oracle announced a deal with Microsoft that calls for Oracle’s database and other software to be made available on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform.

Then on Tuesday, Oracle and Salesforce.com announced a nine-year-long technology partnership under which the companies will tie together their technologies and Salesforce.com will make a major investment in Oracle products for its own cloud computing infrastructure.

Meanwhile, during the company’s conference call to discuss quarterly results Thursday, Ellison spilled the beans on another upcoming Oracle database release, set for the end of this year, which he described as a “columnar, compressed, high-speed, in-memory database.” This release will apparently serve as Oracle’s most direct response yet to SAP’s HANA in-memory database platform.

Cinedigm and Demarest Launch Partnership With Release of 'Short Term 12'

South by Southwest 2013 Grand Jury and audience winner Short Term 12 will be the first movie released under a new co-acquisition and distribution partnership between Demarest Films and Cinedigm, it was announced Tuesday.

Short Term 12, a drama about a twentysomething woman (Brie Larson) working in a foster home, will be theatrically released by Cinedigm on Aug. 23 and will be released in ancillary markets in early 2014. The film also stars Kaitlyn Dever, John Gallagher Jr., Rami Malek and newcomer Keith Stanfield.

The companies envision doing expanded independent film acquisitions, marketing and distribution in the future.

“This arrangement is truly unique as it’s not a traditional distribution or production relationship – it’s a fully fledged partnership that allows us to share equally in the upsides of our indie films, from theatrical all the way throught the vast ancillary opportunities our distribution expertise and infrastructure provides,” says Cinedigm CEO Chris McGurk. “It’s great to be working with such an innovative team, and this arrangement should expand acquisition opportunities for both parties in the future.”

“Cinedigm is on the cutting edge of the independent film renaissance, and we are thrilled to be partnering with them and tapping into the vast potential that digital distribution provides,” said Sam Englebardt, co-founder and CEO of Demarest Films, adding: “We expect this to be the first of many films that we co-release with Cinedigm and a model that we are excited to replicate with other distribution partners as well.”
