Boston bombing suspect charged

Superintendent Timothy Alben: "This is the second step of many that you will see over months and further"

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been formally charged with killing four people and using a weapon of mass destruction.

Mr Tsarnaev, 19, faces 30 total charges in the 15 April blasts, which killed three and injured more than 260 others.

A fourth victim, a policeman, was shot dead by him and his brother as they fled authorities, prosecutors say.

If convicted, Mr Tsarnaev faces life in prison or even the death penalty, US prosecutors said.

In Boston, US Attorney Carmen Ortiz described the Tsarnaev brothers' preparation for the attack, which she said began more than two months earlier.
'Civilians killed'
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan, 26, went to a firing range to take target practice, bought electronic material online that could be used to make bombs, and downloaded a publication that could provide instructions on building explosives, Ms Ortiz told reporters.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev also faces charges for a carjacking days after the attacks and for interfering with commerce, prosecutors said.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shoot-out with police days after the twin blasts. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was injured in the manhunt and has been held in a prison hospital near Boston since his capture on 19 April.

Last month, the suspect's mother said her son had recovered enough to walk, in an interview with the Associated Press. But officials declined to comment on his condition on Thursday.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found hiding in a boat parked in a residential garden in Watertown, Massachusetts, where according to the indictment he wrote: "The US Government is killing our innocent civilians" and "I can't stand to see such evil go unpunished."

According to the charging document, the brothers made bombs from pressure cookers, low-explosive powder, ball bearings, nails, adhesive, electronic components and other material.

It adds that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev aided and abetted his brother by planting and detonating one of the bombs.

Ms Ortiz said at the briefing that she had met the families of those killed and wounded in the attack.

"Their strength is extraordinary and we will do everything that we can to pursue justice not only on their behalf, but on the behalf of all us," she said.

The brothers are from a family of ethnic Chechen Muslims from Russia and had been living in the US for about a decade.

NFL Tight End Aaron Hernandez Charged With Murder

Aaron Hernandez was cut by the New England Patriots after he was arrested Wednesday. Hernandez faces first-degree murder charges in the death of Odin Lloyd, 27.

Pro football player Aaron Hernandez, who until today was a member of the New England Patriots, was charged with murder and other crimes in a Massachusetts courtroom Wednesday. He was arrested this morning and formally charged this afternoon, with authorities blaming him for the death of Odin Lloyd, 27, whose body was found on June 17.

A judge has ordered that Hernandez be held without bail.

Hernandez lives in North Attleboro, Mass., where state and local police arrested him at his house early Wednesday. He was arraigned in Attleboro District Court on charges of first-degree murder and five gun-related crimes in connection with the death of Lloyd, who had been shot.

After outlining their investigation for 25 minutes, prosecutors said "the evidence shows the defendant had the motives and the means to commit the crime."

The evidence reportedly includes surveillance footage, cellphone text messages, rental car records and elements of the crime scene.

Hernandez's attorney, Michael Fee, calls the evidence "circumstantial," saying that the case against his client was "not strong."

Hernandez is next due in court on July 24.

A tight end, the 23-year-old Hernandez is a three-year veteran of the NFL. After a standout career at the University of Florida, he was drafted by the Patriots in 2010. He played in the NFL's Pro Bowl and signed a $40 million contract extension with the Patriots last year.

The Patriots issued this statement when they released Hernandez Wednesday:

"A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello issued the following statement, via the NFL Network:

"The involvement of an NFL player in a case of this nature is deeply troubling. The Patriots have released Aaron Hernandez, who will have his day in court. At the same time, we should not forget the young man who was the victim in this case and take this opportunity to extend our deepest sympathy to Odin Lloyd's family and friends."

Man charged with beating 85-year-old Sandy woman to death with golf club

SANDY -- Police have arrested a man accused of beating his 85-year-old grandmother-in-law to death with a golf club.

Police say officers responded to a Sandy home Thursday night after a woman reported her husband was having a psychotic episode and beating a female in the house with a golf club.

Sgt. Jon Arnold says in a statement police found the body of 85-year-old Arla "Caroline" Christensen and arrested her grandson-in-law, 41-year-old Kevin Cuillard.

Arnold says Cuillard was arrested without incident and booked into Salt Lake County Jail on a homicide charge.

He says Christensen had lived in Mount Pleasant but recently moved into Cuillard's home due to some health issues.
