Government awards £1m fund to help UK datacentres cut carbon footprint

The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), the ministerial department that aims to reduce UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and promote energy efficiency, has awarded almost £1m funding to assist UK datacentres minimise their carbon footprint.

The funding was won by a consortium led by Cambridge-based datacentre energy monitoring company Alquist and involving Verizon and Schneider Electric.

The funding comes after it emerged that datacentre energy requirements grew by 63% in 2012, suggesting that rising energy costs and stricter regulations are not helping to limit datacentre power use and cut carbon emissions.

Alquist will help the two consortium members achieve significant CO2 reductions by integrating its Celsius temperature monitoring system in two refurbishment projects in London.

The funding award from DECC, follows the consortium’s success in the “Invest in Innovative Refurbishment” DECC competition organised by the Technology Strategy Board in April 2012.

Alquist’s datacentre temperature monitoring tool Celsius uses advanced laser technology and fibre optics to create high-definition temperature maps of datacentre server racks and power transmission equipment.

The real-time information will enable datacentre managers to optimise airflow and air-conditioning settings more actively. This will help improve the datacentre facility’s energy usage, offering a mid-size datacentre about 10-30% reduction in electricity bills and carbon emission reduction of up to 2,000 tonnes per annum, according to Alquist.

“Datacentre managers have very limited visibility of temperature fluctuation across their data halls. Celsius offers real-time visibility to enable IT professionals cool equipment far more efficiently and make significant energy savings," said Alquist founder Andrew Jones.

“We are delighted that DECC is investing in an area with huge potential for CO2 reduction.”
Alquist’s temperature monitoring tool targets a high-growth market where the UK, with over £3bn invested in 2011, is the world’s third largest green datacentre player. The global market for green datacentres will grow from $17.1bn (£10bn) in 2012 to $45.4bn (£28bn) by 2016, according to a study.

Datacentres are forecast to consume 6% of UK electricity by 2020 and UK suppliers lead globally in developing green datacentre solutions. Government funding will help refine the Celsius range of tools and provide hard evidence of actual savings at two London demonstrator sites owned and operated by Verizon and Schneider Electric.

"Operating cooling systems efficiently whilst avoiding hotspots is one of the key challenges faced by datacentre operators,” said Natalie Hooper, Verizon’s technical facilities lead in Europe. Using datacentre energy metrics will help it gather necessary temperature information and take aggressive steps to reduce its energy consumption worldwide, she said.

Meanwhile, Schneider Electric’s director of business development, Andy Roberts said: “Our customers want to optimise energy usage and use available power for powering IT equipment rather than for cooling. Schneider Electric’s StruxureWare management suite, together with Celsius’ monitoring capability, can help them achieve this.”

The DECC funding is the latest government initiative in Europe aimed at cutting IT’s carbon footprint. Earlier this year, green IT project CoolEmAll – funded by the European Commission – released the first prototypes of advanced tools designed to help improve the efficiency and sustainability of datacentres.
The tools will be ready for general release in 2014 after feedback from early adopters.

Steve Jobs, Billy Crystal to Receive Disney Legends Awards

Disney has announced a slew of actors, innovators and other artists who will be named Disney Legends at its D23 Expo.

Monsters University stars Billy Crystal and John Goodman, the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and late TV icon Dick Clark are among the honorees. The ceremony will take place during the D23 Expo 2013 at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Anaheim Convention Center.

A 26-year tradition, the Disney Legends Awards program honors those who are "contributors to the Disney legacy." Each honoree receives a two-foot-tall bronze Disney Legends sculpture and will participate in a handprint ceremony. Their bronzed prints will be displayed in the Disney Legends Plaza at the company’s Burbank headquarters.

"The Disney Legend Award is our highest and most coveted honor,” said Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger. “It’s reserved for the extraordinary visionaries and artists behind the Disney magic, the men and women who push the limits of innovation and creativity to ensure Disney remains truly special."

Over the years, a total of 237 Disney Legends have been honored. Past honorees include Tim Allen, Robin Williams, Julie Andrews, Howard Ashman, Regis Philbin, Annette Funicello, Peter Jennings, Angela Lansbury, Steve Martin, Dick Van Dyke and Barbara Walters.

Disney's own biannual event, taking place Aug. 9-11 at the Anaheim Convention Center, will feature a strong Star Wars presence, with Disney planning events like Darth Vader: The Evolution of a Villain, showing the development of the bad guy, to Crash Course in the Force: Star Wars Saga 101.

A complete list of this year's honorees is below:

TONY BAXTER has developed beloved Disney attractions including Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Journey Into Imagination, Splash Mountain and many more during the course of his 43-year career with Walt Disney Imagineering. Revered by Disney fans, he is best known for his commitment to storytelling, attention to detail and ability to develop new ideas and attractions by combining time-tested design practices with modern technology.

COLLIN CAMPBELL touched almost every part of the Walt Disney Co., from animated classics to legendary theme park attractions, with stints in live-action film and television. Collin’s work with Walt Disney Imagineering includes the development of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room and Pirates of the Caribbean as well as concept illustrations of Magic Kingdom Park and Epcot Center.

DICK CLARK brought rock 'n' roll to 40 million homes across the country with the national debut of American Bandstand on ABC in 1958. He went on to produce game shows, award shows including the Golden Globes and the Academy of Country Music Awards, comedy specials, movies and other popular television specials. Clark, who died in April 2012, was the host of ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve from 1973 until 2011.

BILLY CRYSTAL is an acclaimed actor who lends his voice to Mike Wazowski, the frenetic, green cyclopean monster from Monsters Inc. and Monsters University. Best known for his memorable roles in When Harry Met Sally …, The Princess Bride and City Slickers, Crystal, who has won six Emmy Awards and one Tony Award, has also been a fixture on ABC television, where he hosted the Academy Awards broadcast nine times and found his breakthrough role as Jodie Dallas on Soap from 1977-81.

JOHN GOODMAN is a celebrated actor of stage and screen and the voice behind James P. Sullivan, better known as “Sully,” from Monsters Inc. and Monsters University. Among his notable film appearances are The Big Lebowski, The Flintstones and most recently Argo and Flight. Goodman's appearances in Disney-produced films include the Hollywood Pictures films Arachnophobia and Born Yesterday as well as Touchstone Pictures’ Stella, Coyote Ugly, O Brother, Where Art Thou and Confessions of a Shopaholic.

STEVE JOBS changed the world of consumer electronics as the founder of Apple and was known throughout the world for his visionary attitude and penchant for innovation. He was an early investor and chief executive of Pixar and became Disney's largest shareholder overnight when it acquired Pixar Animation Studios in 2006. That same year, he joined the Disney board of directors and remained a valuable sounding board and adviser to the company until his death in October 2011.

GLEN KEANE has brought to life many of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ most popular characters. Since becoming a Disney animator in 1974, he has animated classic Disney characters such as Penny in The Rescuers, Elliott in Pete’s Dragon, Ratigan in The Great Mouse Detective, the Beast in Beauty and the Beast and the titular characters in The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Pocahontas and Tarzan. In 2010, he served as executive producer and animation supervisor for Tangled, a story he developed for more than 10 years.

Clooney, Bullock's 'Gravity' to Open Venice: Is It a Major Awards Contender? (Analysis)

Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, a 3D sci-fi drama that stars Oscar winners George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as astronauts lost in space, will kick off the 70th Venice International Film, the fest announced Friday morning. (The festival runs from Aug. 28 through Sept. 7, and, as always, will overlap with North America's Telluride and Toronto film festivals.)

Based on the talent involved and the way that Warner Bros. is positioning the film -- the studio is giving it an Oct. 4 release date, which is just a week earlier on the fall calendar than the slot Warners used to launch Oscar-winner Argo last year -- I am inclined to think that the long-gestating film is going to be a major player this awards season. But, one must note, the folks who schedule the opening-night slot at Venice have, in recent years, had a hit-or-miss track record of picking films that also appeal to Oscar and Golden Globe voters.

PHOTOS: Jason Bateman to Jennifer Lopez: The Actors of the Academy's 2013 Class

Gravity, which will open the fest but will not be in competition for its various awards (as was the case for The Great Gatsby at May's Cannes Film Festival), will follow in some considerable footsteps:

Julie Taymor's Frida (2002) went on to Oscar wins for makeup and original score and noms for actress, art direction, costume design and original song, plus a Golden Globe win for original score and nom for actress (drama); Joe Wright's Atonement (2007) went on to an Oscar win for original score and noms for picture, supporting actress, adapted screenplay, art direction, cinematography and costume design; Ethan and Joel Coen's Burn After Reading (2008) went on to Golden Globe noms for picture (musical or comedy) and actress (musical or comedy); Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan (2010) went on to an Oscar win for actress and noms for picture, director, cinematography and film editing, plus a Golden Globe win for actress (drama) and Golden Globe noms for picture (drama), director and supporting actress; and Clooney's The Ides of March (2011) went on to an Oscar nom for adapted screenplay and Golden Globe noms for picture (drama), director, actor (drama) and screenplay.

PHOTOS: Oscars Time Capsule: The Infamous 1989 Academy Awards

But it will also, however, follow in some less distinguished footsteps:

Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys (2000) went on to only a sound editing Oscar nom; Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia (2006) went on to only a cinematography Oscar nom; and Milcho Manchevski's Dust (2001), Woody Allen's Anything Else (2003), Steven Spielberg's The Terminal (2004), Tsui Hark's Seven Swords (2005), Giuseppe Tornatore's Baaria (2009) and, last year, Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012) all received no major awards recognition.

Gravity could conceivably show up in Toronto, as well, but most films play either at Telluride and Toronto or at Venice, not at some combination thereof. In recent years, far more future Oscar and Golden Globe nominees and winners have passed through the former route than the latter -- perhaps because a larger contingent of the North American press covers the former events.

Indeed, seven of the past 13 best picture Oscar winners (Crash, No Country for Old Men, Slumdog Millionaire, The Hurt Locker, The King's Speech, The Artist and Argo) and 10 of the 26 best picture Golden Globe winners (Almost Famous, Lost in Translation, Sideways, Brokeback Mountain, Walk the Line, Babel, Atonement, Slumdog Millionaire, The Descendants and Argo) screened at one or both of those fests, whereas only one future best picture Oscar winner (The Hurt Locker) and two best picture Golden Globe winners (Lost in Translation and Brokeback Mountain) screened at Venice.

BET Awards 2013: Kendrick Lamar Wins Big, Justin Timberlake Performs With Charlie Wilson

Rapper Kendrick Lamar, winner of the Best New Artist Award at the 2013 BET Awards, poses in the Backstage Winner's Room at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on June 30, 2013 in Los Angeles, California.

Kendrick Lamar was the night's big winner at the 2013 BET Awards on Sunday, June 30, but plenty of other stars -- including Justin Timberlake, Drake, Miguel, Charlie Wilson, Nicki Minaj, and Mariah Carey -- got time in the spotlight, too. Lamar, 26, capped off his breakout year with three awards, including Best New Artist and Best Male Hip Hop Artist. He also did double-duty as a performer, taking the stage with Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae for "Q.U.E.E.N." and with 2 Chainz and A$AP Rocky for "F--kin' Problems."

"To my little homeboys and my homegirls back in the city, you looking at me on TV right now, I came up in that same county building, food stamps, welfare section eight," the Compton-raised rapper said while accepting one of his three trophies. "This is living proof that you can do anything you put your mind to."

Other big winners included Drake, who led with 12 nominations and won the Viewer's Choice Award, Video of the Year, and Best Collaboration (which he shared with Lamar, 2 Chainz, and A$AP Rocky); Rihanna, who beat out Beyonce and Alicia Keys for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist; Miguel, who won best Male R&B/Pop Artist; and R&B legend Charlie Wilson, who took home the Lifetime Achievement Award and performed a medley of his hits alongside Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, Stevie Wonder, Jamie Foxx, Snoop Dogg, and India.Arie.

"Charlie Wilson is soul music. His impact colors the work of many artists, which is basically my nice way of saying that I and a lot of other artists have stolen from him," Timberlake joked when presenting the award to Wilson.

Patrick Doyle, Hal David, 'Three's Company' Theme Honored at ASCAP Film & TV Awards

Paul Williams Patrick Doyle ASCAP Awards 2013 L

Tributes to the late Marvin Hamlisch and Hal David, an entertaining speech from composer Patrick Doyle and a performance of the theme from Three's Company were highlights of ASCAP's 28th annual Film & Television Music Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on June 20.

Doyle, who received the Henry Mancini Award for his achievements and contributions to the world of film and television music, was saluted via video by Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson. Julia Rinker Miller saluted Ray Charles, her singing partner on Three's Company, with a rendition of the classic theme song; Charles, 94, was honored for his vocal ensemble work with Perry Como, Your Hit Parade and Kennedy Center Honors.

Prior to songwriter Alan Bergman singing "The Way We Were," Marilyn Bergman saluted their collaborator Hamlisch by saying "working with Marvin was like being in a large sandbox."

PHOTOS: Scores That Rock: 10 Musicians Who Crossed Over to Movies

Performances included Graham Parker doing a song from This is 40 (see photo below), a Brazilian jazz-style medley of Oscar nominees, Kevin Odekirk singing Marc Shaiman's arrangement of Cole Porter's "Another Op'nin', Another Show" and Jack Wall and Kamar de los Reyes doing Wall's "Niño Precioso," composed for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

ASCAP president and chairman Paul Williams offered adulation for David's lyrics on Burt Bacharach tunes and turned serious about ASCAP's efforts to secure income for composers. He said the latest target is the Internet radio site Pandora. "The gloves are going to come off now," he said.

Those honored in the Top Box Office Films category were James Newton Howard (The Bourne Legacy, The Hunger Games and Snow White and the Huntsman), Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight Rises and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted), Howard Shore (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey), Marc Shaiman (Parental Guidance) and Carter Burwell (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2).

A dark tale about a Russian detective's spiraling into moral oblivion as he attempts to conceal a hit-and-run which led to the death of a passer-by, The Major – which premiered at the Critics’ Week at Cannes last month – was named Best Film, while Bykov himself secured the Best Director prize as well as an Artistic Achievement Award for his score for the film.

Meanwhile, Reliance won a Jury Prize, with screenwriter Angus MacLachlan and cinematographer Vachan Sharma also netting prizes in their respective categories. Released a week before its international premiere in Shanghai, Olsson’s film revolves around the breakdown of a family after one of its members were subjected to a sexual assault at home.

Financed by mainland Chinese studio Bona Film Group, Dante Lam’s Unbeatable brought some cheers to the local crowd with its stars Nick Cheung and Crystal Lee winning the Best Actor and Actress titles. Cheung plays an ex-convict forced to make a living in illicit boxing matches, with Lee delivering a critically-acclaimed turn as the ten-year-old girl he’s trying to take care of.

The competition jury was chaired by Tom Hooper, who was joined in Shanghai this year by fellow directors Chris Kraus (Germany), Khosro Masoumi (Iran), Jiri Menzel (Czech Republic) and Ning Hao (mainland China), and also Chinese actress Yu Nan and French critic Michel Ciment.

The festival’s Asian New Talent Awards were already unveiled on Friday, with South Korean director Roh Doek’s Very Ordinary Couple winning the Best Feature prize. Singapore’s Wong Chen Hsi was named Best Director for his work Innocents, while mainland Chinese filmmaker Liu Juan took the Jury Prize for Singing When We Are Young.

The jury for this young-director showcase was led by mainland Chinese director Lu Chuan, and also comprised Indian festival programmer Aruna Vasudev, Korean director Choi Dong-hoon, US producer Gary Kurtz and French actress Laura Weissbacker.

The festival, which began on June 15 by bestowing Oliver Stone and Tsui Hark with honorary awards before screening Monsters University, concluded its nine-day run on Sunday with a screening of the U.S. heist caper Now You See Me.
