BET Awards 2013: Kendrick Lamar Wins Big, Justin Timberlake Performs With Charlie Wilson

Kendrick Lamar was the night's big winner at the 2013 BET Awards on Sunday, June 30, but plenty of other stars -- including Justin Timberlake, Drake, Miguel, Charlie Wilson, Nicki Minaj, and Mariah Carey -- got time in the spotlight, too. Lamar, 26, capped off his breakout year with three awards, including Best New Artist and Best Male Hip Hop Artist. He also did double-duty as a performer, taking the stage with Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae for "Q.U.E.E.N." and with 2 Chainz and A$AP Rocky for "F--kin' Problems."

"To my little homeboys and my homegirls back in the city, you looking at me on TV right now, I came up in that same county building, food stamps, welfare section eight," the Compton-raised rapper said while accepting one of his three trophies. "This is living proof that you can do anything you put your mind to."

Other big winners included Drake, who led with 12 nominations and won the Viewer's Choice Award, Video of the Year, and Best Collaboration (which he shared with Lamar, 2 Chainz, and A$AP Rocky); Rihanna, who beat out Beyonce and Alicia Keys for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist; Miguel, who won best Male R&B/Pop Artist; and R&B legend Charlie Wilson, who took home the Lifetime Achievement Award and performed a medley of his hits alongside Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, Stevie Wonder, Jamie Foxx, Snoop Dogg, and India.Arie.

"Charlie Wilson is soul music. His impact colors the work of many artists, which is basically my nice way of saying that I and a lot of other artists have stolen from him," Timberlake joked when presenting the award to Wilson.

Scotty McCreery Performs at Sweet 16 for Duck Dynasty Star's Daughter

Scotty McCreery performed at Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson's daughter Sadie's Sweet 16 birthday party on June 17.

Scotty McCreery is perfecting his duck call! The 19-year-old Season 10 American Idol winner made a special appearance at Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson's daughter Sadie's Sweet 16 birthday party on June 17.

McCreery sang a duet with Willie, and serenaded the birthday girl during the bash. Sadie tells Us Weekly that she "freaked out" over McCreery's appearance, and even cajoled him to dance the two-step with her. "He doesn't usually dance!" she marveled.

Willie and his wife Korie threw their daughter the over-the-top soiree -- complete with a "Redneck Red Carpet" -- in West Monroe, La.

"It felt like a party for everyone!" Korie told Us. The 200 invited guests enjoyed lobster corn dogs and decorations selected by HGTV's Junk Gypsies.

"Great time out at Sadie's bday party!" McCreery tweeted after the party. "Thanks for letting me come sing . . . They really know how to have a good time down in West Monroe."

Sadie posted a photo of herself posing with the country singer and tweeted, "This boy made my birthday the best day of my life! So thankful that he came down for my party!"

On Monday, July 1, McCreery made a big announcement regarding his surprise friendship with the Duck Dynasty cast. "So here's the news y'all! I'll be joining the Duck Cruise with Duck Dynasty next summer! Gonna be tons of fun! Come out and sail with us!"

Duck Dynasty fans can purchase tickets to go on a cruise out of Miami to Key West and Cozumel with the cast on July 17-21, 2014. "Exciting news!" Korie also added. "Scotty McCreery is going to sail the seas with us next summer on our Duck Cruise! We're gonna have a blast!"

Jesse Tyler Ferguson Performs Shakespeare Despite Downpour, No Sound

The show must go on.

The cast, crew and audience at The Public Theater’s staging of William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors put that adage to the test last night when the heavens opened over Central Park’s open-air Delacorte Theater a third of the way into the play.  Midsummer rain is a common occurrence for the beloved summer tradition that is Shakespeare in the Park, so the production paused until the thunderstorm let up.

That’s when the crew discovered a setback worthy of an Act Four plot twist: The soundboard had sustained water damage and was completely fried. The stage manager was about to cancel the show when stars Hamish Linklater and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who each pull double duty as one of the play’s two pairs of twins, had an idea.

THEATER REVIEW: The Comedy of Errors

“Did George C. Scott have a body mic when he did The Merchant of Venice back in 1961 at this same theater?” Ferguson wrote in a Facebook post recapping last night’s unforgettable performance. “Let’s finish the show wireless. Unplugged!”

The company manager agreed to proceed, and Linklater and Ferguson ran out on stage to deliver the good news, urging the 600 remaining audience members (out of a capacity crowd of 1800) to move close to the stage to hear.

“What proceeded was one of the most magical hours of my life,” Ferguson wrote. “The brilliant [actress] De’Adre Aziza started where we left off, with her jazz-influenced version of Sigh No More, the audience snapping along to keep the beat. When [cast member] Emily Bergl knocked a gun out of Tyler Caffall’s hand the entire company, in unison, yelled ‘BANG’ and then produced the dying cat sound that was meant to follow.”

Even when the downpour resumed the show continued. “Hamish called it the greatest game of ‘Chicken’ ever played,” Ferguson wrote. “The audience wasn’t leaving because we kept going and we continued on only because the 600 strong stayed put. Everyone was soaked but at this point, who cared. (Apologies to our brilliant costume designer, Toni-Leslie James, who probably cared a little.)”

The play is a comedy, but the performance left Ferguson in tears. “The audience stayed completely still and silent to hear the final words of the play,” he wrote. “That’s when I lost it. You never would have been able to tell because I was soaking wet, but I started to ugly cry.”

“I was so moved by this shared moment," he continued. "It truly personified why I am fueled to put on silly costumes and wigs and pretend to be someone else in front of a collected group of strangers. When we finally reached the end of the play the audience exploded into applause. We didn’t bow, though… all we could do was applaud right back to THEM.”
