Microsoft to pay first IE 11 Preview bug bounty to BlueHat security contest finalist

Microsoft has already received several vulnerability reports that qualify for monetary rewards as part of the company’s bug bounty program launched in June for the preview version of Internet Explorer 11.

The recipient of the first IE 11 bounty will be Ivan Fratric, a security researcher who earned second place and $50,000 last year in Microsoft’s BlueHat Prize contest for the development of defensive technologies. Fratric’s entry into the contest was a system called ROPGuard, which can detect and prevent return-oriented programming (ROP) attacks.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Fratric worked as a researcher at the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing until October 2012, when he joined Google as an information security engineer.

“The security community has responded enthusiastically to our new bounty programs, submitting over a dozen issues for us to investigate in just the first two weeks since the programs opened,” said Katie Moussouris, a senior security strategist with Microsoft’s Security Response Center, Wednesday in a blog post. “I personally notified the very first bounty recipient via email today that his submission for the Internet Explorer 11 Preview Bug Bounty is confirmed and validated,” she said, adding that this means “he’s getting paid.”

Moussouris did not disclose the identity of the first bounty recipient in the blog post, but she confirmed Thursday that it’s Fratric in a Twitter message congratulating him.

Other researchers qualified for IE 11 bounties as well and they will be notified soon, Moussouris said in the blog post. Microsoft will create an acknowledgement page to list the researchers who wish to be publicly recognized, she said.

Microsoft announced the IE 11 Preview bug bounty program on June 19, after years of being reluctant to the idea of paying security researchers for reporting vulnerabilities in its products. In the past, the company preferred to encourage the development of active defenses like anti-exploitation techniques that can block entire classes of exploits. The BlueHat Prize contest in 2012, with a prize pool of over $250,000, was intended to promote the development of such defensive technology.

The IE 11 Preview bug bounty program, meanwhile, kicked off on June 26 and will run for 30 days, until July 26. The reported vulnerabilities can qualify for bounties between $500 and $11,000, or even more in particular cases, depending on the gravity of the vulnerability and the quality of the report.

“It’s not about offering the most money, but rather about putting attractive bounties out at times where there are few buyers (if any),” Moussouris said. “For our products, that tends to be during the preview (or beta) period.”

At the end of June, Fratric said on Twitter that he reported a potential memory corruption issue in IE 11 Preview to Microsoft, but it’s not clear if that’s the bug that won him the program’s first bounty.

In addition to the IE 11 Preview bounty program, Microsoft also launched two other programs, one that will reward researchers for finding novel exploitation techniques to circumvent Windows 8.1’s exploit mitigation defenses and the other for developing new ways to block known exploitation techniques.

How to download Windows 8.1 Preview

The curious and the thrill-seeking rushed to their PCs as Microsoft unveiled the preview version of Windows 8.1 at its Build 2013 conference Wednesday. It’s free, but not quite anyone can get it yet. Microsoft promises that an ISO version of the preview will be available within the next day, but meanwhile, it’s available only through the Windows store—in other words, to Windows 8 and Windows RT users. Bah humbug!

When it becomes available, the Windows 8.1 Preview ISO experience should be similar to running Windows in a virtual machine. In the meantime, here’s what Windows Store shoppers need to know to get the preview.

Remember that Windows 8.1 Preview is a beta-level operating system that could break. At PCWorld labs, we've tried loading it on 5 systems and have already had one hang. Another, low-powered system is taking forever to chug through the process. Microsoft offers no technical support for the preview, just an online forum. Unless you enjoy danger, download this preview to a system other than your primary one. You should also back up the device and read the Windows 8.1 preview FAQs.

The system requirements are the same as for current Windows 8 products: for starters, a 1GHz or faster processor and a MicrosoftDirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver. A 32-bit system will need 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage space, while 64-bit systems will need 2GB of RAM and 20GB of storage space. For the Windows RT 8.1 Preview, you’ll need a device that’s already running Windows RT and also has 10 GB of free storage space.

Windows RT users, please note: If you download the preview, there’s no going back—you won’t be able to restore your prior Windows RT operation system to the device. You will, however, be able to upgrade to the shipping version of the 8.1 update coming to Windows RT in the future.

To start, go to preview.windows.com and click the 'Get it now' button.

We tried the download on a Windows 8 system. You go to the Preview page and click the ‘Get it now’ button.

Another page appears, with further instructions and a button to click for ‘Get the update.’

On the next screen, click 'Get the update' to start downloading the first file.

At this point, Microsoft downloads a file to your device, which you install, and then you restart your device.

Once the device has restarted, you should be prompted to go to the Windows Store and download the preview.

Once you've downloaded the first file and restarted your system, you should be able to find the Preview file in the Windows Store.

We’ve all been waiting for the Windows 8.1 Preview to arrive and restore our hopes for this operating system. Stay tuned for more reports on our initial experiences—and let us know what you think about it, too.

Box Office Preview: 'Monsters University' Pacing to Beat 'World War Z'

Monsters University

Families are expected to flock to the multiplex in big numbers this weekend as Disney and Pixar open Monsters University, the long-awaited sequel to the 2001 pic Monsters, Inc.

Based on pre-release tracking, box observers believe the 3D toon has a strong shot at grossing $70 million or more in its debut, likely enough to beat out Brad Pitt's high-profile zombie pic World War Z and holdover Man of Steel. Both Monsters U and World War Z roll out in select theaters at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Paramount is predicting an opening in the $40 million to $45 million for World War Z, which is rated PG-13. But more bullish box office observers with access to tracking believe the movie -- produced by and starring Pitt -- could open in the $50 million range, while Man of Steel could earn anywhere from $50 million to $60 million in its second outing.

Versus a big opening, Paramount and co-financing partner Skydance Productions is banking on World War Z to have a better-than-usual multiple, similar to other original tentpoles. Avatar debuted to $77 million in December 2009 on its way to cuming $760.5 million domestically, or 10 times its opening number. And in summer 2010, Christopher Nolan's Inception grossed $292.6 million, nearly five times its $62 million debut.

Paramount insiders point out that very few original event pics open to $50 million or higher. And while Pitt may be one of the world's most recognizable stars, his biggest opening was the $50.3 million earned by Mr. and Mrs. Smith in summer 2005.

FILM REVIEW: World War Z

World War Z, based on Max Brook's 2006 novel of the same name, is a sizeable gamble for the studio, costing $190 million to produce after tax incentives. The budget was originally $150 million, but extensive reshoots bumped up the number. (It was initially slotted to open in December 2010.)

Directed by Marc Forster, the apocalyptic horror pic is a passion project for Pitt, who produced the movie via his Paramount-based production company Plan B. In the film, he plays a retired U.N. employee who must return to work and stop a worldwide pandemic that is turning humans into zombies. The Killing's Mireille Enos stars as his wife.

World War Z, which has received generally positive reviews, will need to make a strong showing overseas, where it opens in 25 foreign markets this weekend, including the U.K., South Korea and Australia.

Monsters U, directed by Don Scanlon, returns Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Frank Oz in the roles of Mike Wazowski, James P. Sullivan, Randall Boggs, and Jeff Fungus, respectively.

The animated tentpole will have plenty of competition in the coming weeks as a record number of 3D summer toons open. Next up is Universal's Despicable Me 2 on July 3.

New offerings at the specialty box office include Somali pirates drama A Hijacking, from Danish writer-director Tobias Lindholm. Magnolia is distributing the film in the U.S.

Among holdovers, Sofia Copolla's The Bling Ring expands from five theaters to more than 500 locations on Friday.

Box Office Preview: 'Man of Steel' Breaks Records in Asia, Lands in U.S. Thursday Night

Man of Steel General Zod Shannon Close Up - H 2013

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' much-anticipated Man of Steel is already off to a record-breaking start in Southeast Asia, where the superhero tentpole scored the biggest opening day of all time in the Philippines and the biggest opening day for a Warners film in Taiwan.

Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan, begins rolling out at the North American box office Thursday night before playing everywhere on Friday. Box-office observers expect the $225 million film to open in the $85 million-to-$100 million range, although Warners is being more conservative and projecting an $80 million bow.

Overseas, Man of Steel is opening day-and-date in 24 markets, landing first in the Philippines and Taiwan, where it earned $1.7 million and $794,742, respectively. Among other major markets, it opens in the U.K. and Mexico on Friday. The following weekend, the tentpole opens in 26 additional markets, including China, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and Spain.

British actor Henry Cavill stars as Clark Kent, aka Superman, in the origin tale, which sees his character trying to hide his superpowers and live a normal life on Earth. Amy Adams stars as Lois Lane, and Michael Shannon takes on the role of the menacing General Zod.

David S. Goyer penned the script based on a story by he and Nolan. Warners and Legendary turned to Nolan as a producer on the project after he successfully revived the Batman franchise with his Dark Knight trilogy. In the summer of 2005, Nolan's Batman Begins opened to $48.7 million and had incredible staying power.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's This Is the End, the weekend's other new offering, debuted Wednesday in order to get a jump on Man of Steel. The Sony comedy is overperforming so far, posting an opening-day gross of $7.8 million and putting it on course for a five-day debut in the low- to mid-$30 million range.

Marking the directorial debut of Rogen and Goldberg, This Is the End stars Rogen opposite Jonah Hill, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera and Emma Watson.

In the raunchy comedy, the actors -- all playing fictional versions of themselves -- are attending a star-studded party at Franco's house when the apocalypse begins and they're forced to work together to survive. The feature is based on a short film created by Rogen and Baruchel in 2007 titled Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse. Rogen and Goldberg also co-wrote the scripts for Superbad, The Green Hornet and The Watch.

New entires at the specialty box office include Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, which A24 Films opens in five theaters, and The Weinstein Co.'s documentary 20 Feet From Stardom.

Box Office Preview: 'This Is the End' Eyeing $30 Million-Plus Debut

This Is The End Guys with Weapons - H 2013

Looking to get a jump on Man of Steel, Sony's raunchy apocalypse comedy This Is the End rolls out in select theaters Tuesday night before opening everywhere in North America on Wednesday.

The ensemble film -- marking the directorial debut of Pineapple Express scribes Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg -- is hoping for a pleasing five-day debut in the low $30 million range, which would recoup the film's $32 million budget.

Starring Rogen, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera and Emma Watson, This is the End hopes to serve as counter programming  to Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' Superman entry Man of Steel, which begins rolling out Thursday night in the U.S.

This is the End, which will play in more than 2,900 theaters, also features several other cameos during the early scenes at Franco's house party, including appearances by Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Jason Segel, Paul Rudd and Kevin Hart.

In terms of sheer gross, the comedy will be eclipsed once the highly anticipated Man of Steel debuts. Zack Snyder's superhero action film, produced by Christopher Nolan, opens in 24 foreign markets, including in South Korea on Thursday.

The Bachelorette Preview: Michael Calls Ben an "Absentee Father"

Memo to all present and future Bachelor hopefuls: Making someone else look bad in an effort to make yourself look good is not as effective a tactic as you might think. Case in point? This preview clip from the fifth episode of The Bachelorette -- airing Monday, June 24 -- in which Michael G. attempts to expose Ben as this season's villain while on a two-on-one date with Desiree Hartsock.

PHOTOS: Meet the men competing for Desiree's love

Ben has been the odd man out since the very beginning of the season; none of the other guys competing for Des' affections like him, trust him, or think he's there "for the right reasons." Until now, however, Des has remained in the dark about his reputation, and Michael wants to change that.

"Ben is this absentee father who mentions his son and uses his son when it serves him," Michael says in a confessional. "It's sickening."

PHOTOS: The Bachelor -- where are they now?

With that in mind, Michael uses his and Ben's date with Des in Germany to grill Ben about his ex and his son, prompting the single dad to admit that he hasn't had any contact with the little boy since coming on the show. (He chalks it up to the time difference.)

Michael then proceeds to tell a story about his own experience with an absentee father, which annoys Ben. Des, for her part, is mostly silent throughout the interaction, but she appears visibly uncomfortable to be caught in the middle.

"What I thought was going to be fine and we were going to be able to be civil...I was totally wrong," Ben says in a confessional. "I don't know how much more of what he's saying I can take."

Watch the tense two-on-one date now, and tune in to The Bachelorette on Monday, June 24, at 8 p.m. EDT to see Des and the rest of the guys in Germany!
