Utah 5K run will include guns

Running and guns don’t usually go hand in hand, at least in the world of 5K races. Unless the race is the proposed Run4Guns this fall where participants will openly carry firearms as they run.
Run4Guns is billed as the nation’s first open carry race event. Organizers say the aim of the race is to stand up for 2nd Amendment Rights and support those who have been victims of gun related violence.
“One of the biggest misconceptions about gun violence is that we, as a society, can prevent it by limiting firearm ownership.” said Macgregor Whiting, co-director of the race. “Efforts to limit gun ownership have instead left law-abiding citizens complacently unaware and increasingly vulnerable.”
The event will be held Sept. 21 at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, 475 N. Main St. The entry fee is $20.
“We believe that our efforts increase awareness of the ‘right to keep and bear arms’ and of the support for its protection,” said Whiting. “We hope that increasing numbers of citizens will exercise this right, putting firearms in the hands of responsible law abiding citizens.”
The Run4Guns event has two lengths: 5K and 0.5 mile. The race is designed to be more of a celebration of 2nd Amendment Rights than a straight forward running race.
“We include a 0.5 mile Armed Dash because that is what we would rather participate in ourselves,” said Royal Bateman, co-director of race.
In order to run, all participants agree to abide by state and local laws. Utah State Law requires that a person must be age 18 years old or older to Open Carry a firearm. Participants as young as 14 years old are allowed to participate, but cannot carry guns. An adult must accompany any participant under the age of 18 at all times during the event.
